Description

Cinematography is a scientific art form, and this 10 hour series of online workshops will help you understand how to capture great motion-picture photography with whatever camera you have access to, (for instance, a pro/semi-pro camcorder, DSLR, Mirrorless cameras, or indeed your smartphone.) Our Five Week Cinematography – Online Course covers the basics of the many varied aspects of cinematography including camera operation, focus, depth of field and lens manipulation. It gives learners a good understanding of dramatic lighting techniques, lighting for interviews, the inverse square law, digital imaging technology (DIT), colour correction, and grading.

With in-depth technical explanation and hands-on shooting tasks, this is an ideal course for those with some level of experience with cameras and also for more experienced filmmakers keen to build upon their knowledge and gain an enhanced perspective of the creative visual filmmaking process. Small class size.

Who is Five Week Cinematography – Online Course aimed at?

For confident learners (18+) with a limitless creative passion to become a visual filmmaker. They need some previous experience (or have taken an introductory course or courses). They need access to some sort of camera (including mobiles) and video editing software (free or paid).

Note: Sessions are run on Zoom and are recorded so you can “catch-up” on missed sessions or watch again.

Your tutor – Andi Reiss

Andi Reiss is an award-winning independent documentary self-shooting producer/director, photographer and editor. He has also written, produced, directed, shot and edited a number of drama projects, commercials, corporates, music videos and experimental installations. He is currently exploring experimental documentary cinematography as an aesthetic and aural art form, by augmenting his socially conscious stories with alternative content, such as 360 video and interactive VR, to create ever more impactful experiences.

Review of Course

I joined the Cinematography course to learn how to make my short documentary films more cinematic and visually engaging. I really enjoyed watching different film clips and learning about the different types of shots. Seeing the films that the other participants made and critiquing them was also really interesting. The tutor was very knowledgeable and conveyed the content in an engaging and interactive way. He also has gone above and beyond to support me and provide input on the film project I am working on. The skills I learned on the course are very relevant and can be applied directly to my film work.

It was also great to interact with the other participants on the course, and the tutor facilitated this even though it was an on-line course by putting us into small discussion groups. The other participants were inspiring with their creativity and input and I am still in contact with one of them. I would recommend this course to anyone from beginner to intermediate level, as it covers the basic knowledge required, as well as developing skill levels across the board.  Nicola Schafer
