Sons Of Cuba Film O.N.E. network event 24th May

Dated: May 19, 2010

Film O.N.E Industry Network Event
Presents
SONS OF CUBA
Malmaison Oxford, 3 Oxford Castle, New Road, Oxford, OX1 1AY
Monday 24th May, 7pm.

Film O.N.E. and Screen South invite you to a special screening and Q & A with the Director and Producer of the multi-award winning film Sons Of Cuba.

SONS OF CUBA is set in the legendary Havana Boxing Academy, a boarding school that hand picks 9- year-old boys, and turns them into the best boxers in the world. The results have been stunning: Cuba has dominated Olympic boxing for the past quarter of a century.

The boys duties extend far beyond the ring: They are groomed not only as world-class fighters, but also to be international symbols for their country, dubbed by Castro: "the standard bearers of the Revolution”.

During their training crisis strikes: Fidel Castro, the boys leader and inspiration, is taken ill, and all of Cuba’s Olympic boxing champions defect to the USA, leaving the boys contemplating a future which is altogether different from the one they have been taught to believe in.

Andrew Lang’s filmmaking career began with courses at the Universidad Catolica (Chile) and International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (EICTV) where he studied documentary. SONS OF CUBA was originally intended to be a 10 minute short but after showing it to Kim Longinotto the project developed into a feature, even though Andrew had never made a film let alone a feature.
Three years later SONS OF CUBA scooped an impressive collection of international awards!

After a successful career in business, Francine Heywood started working in film in 2005 with her producing partner Laura Giles. They have produced a number of short films and are now focusing on developing a slate of feature length narrative projects.
