Postponed: Reel One ‘on demand’ network evening

Dated: January 11, 2007

Sorry we have had to postpone the below network evening. We will reschedule Ben’s visit in the spring

REEL ONE “BBC On-Demand”

What is the future for TV? Where, when and how will we be watching Eastenders or Match of the Day? Will we be straining at our mobile phones, PCs or PDA’s in this new ‘on demand’ world? And how is it going to affect the programme makers?

An opportunity to find out more about the future of ‘on demand’ TV from the man who is shaping it.

Ben Lavender – (BBC Technical Executive, Future Media & Technology)

Thursday 25th January 7.30pm at OFVM. 54 Catherine Street Oxford, OX4 3AH.  Free entry.

Ben in recent years invented and ran the BBC iMP (interactive media player) trials (a catch-up TV and Radio service that allows audiences to download the previous weeks programmes over the internet using peer-to-peer and DRM and view them on their PCs, mobile devices and TVs). The trial was pivotal in re engineering the BBC’s role as broadcaster in an on – demand world

Currently he is defining the 5 year strategy for iPlayer which incorporates iMP and the BBC’s existing audio visual consoles in to a live service launching early 2007.

In 2004 Ben won The Royal Television Society Technical Innovation Award as well as a BAFTA for best online entertainment game – Celebdaq, the biggest, most successful online game, the BBC has ever attempted.

Prior to joining the BBC in 2001, he was Technical Director for Mode, leading the development of company’s product suite, business-to-business applications for Internet distribution of music, video and software over using Digital Rights Management. Before that senior roles at Channel 5, MTV, Walt Disney
