Film ONE is proud to present an evening with Stephen Frears
To try and encapsulate the list of credits associated with Stephen Frears in one small space is a mean task…
Though his first feature was Gumshoe (1971), his directing talent was established in television, where he contributed to several high-profile series’ such as the BBC’s Play for Today.
In 1984 he came back to film, rising to prominence when he directed My Beautiful Launderette for Channel 4. The production was released theatrically to great acclaim. Now Stephen’s talents were firmly on the map.
Since then he has directed a total of 52 film and TV titles both in Britain and America which include many highly acclaimed works such as The Hi-Lo Country (1998), High Fidelity (2000), Dirty Pretty Things (2002), Mrs. Henderson Presents (2005) starring Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins, The Queen (2006) starring Helen Mirrren, Cheri (2009) starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Tamara Drewe (2010) starring Gemma Arterton, a film set in the English countryside based on the Guardian comic strip by Posy Simmonds, which itself was inspired by Thomas Hardy’s Far From the Madding Crowd.
Despite his compelling ability to tell a story through film – by his own admission his films portray ‘very complete worlds’ – Stephen’s films are hard to put into a genre, they cover a variety of topics and defy the usual pigeon holing. Instead they are simply characterized by an interest in love, beauty and ageing and a certain fury with the world, often exposing prejudices whilst featuring subversive characters – especially strong female figures.
Come and meet him for yourself and decide what makes this extraordinary filmmaker tick.
