Mas Prep – Caribbean Carnival and traditional masquerade on screen – free documentary screening

Dated: June 11, 2024

Free film screening with Q&A with filmmaker Shari Petti

Friday 21st June 2024, 6.30pm at Film Oxford
54 Catherine Street, Oxford, OX4 3AH

This film night is dedicated to the rich history and art forms of Caribbean Carnival, which are deeply connected to the Windrush generation and diasporic experience. The event at Film Oxford shows the docu-series ‘Mas Prep’, offering viewers an opportunity to witness the intricate process of creating breathtaking mas, from sourcing raw materials to performing sacred rituals.

‘Mas Prep’ captures the very essence of traditional mas art and showcases the challenges and triumphs that these talented artists face in their pursuit of artistic excellence. Trinidadian filmmaker and founder of Scene Productions, Shari Petti is taking the audience on an immersive journey into the vibrant world of traditional mas makers from the Blue Devils in the hills of Paramin to the Moko Jumbies, Jab Molassie and Burrokeets.

The screening will be followed by a guest talk and open audience discussion, and a Caribbean Curry inspired buffet. The event is funded by Oxford Brookes through the ‘Diversifying Oxfordshire Audiences’ initiative.
