Help local writer with learning disabilities

Dated: July 12, 2018

Support Russell to put on his new play in Oxford

Russell Highsmith is the only playwright in the UK with learning disabilities, he is part of the Shadowlight Artists group supported by Film Oxford. Building on the success of his previous play “The Big Shock” he has written a new full-length romantic comedy play called “Singles Night” that draws from his own experience of dating. His particular situation gives him a wry, sideways perspective on life but it’s a view that is always extraordinarily upbeat and optimistic. Make a donation to help Russell fulfil his dream and put on his new play in Oxford, which will also be filmed and screened.

How the funding will be spent
Most of the funds have been raised via an Arts Council Grant, however Russell needs an additional £1500 to help pay to put on the production at the Old Fire Station in Oxford on 19/20 Sept. 2018. This will help pay for publicity, theatre hire, technical & other support, actors and expenses. “Russell is remarkable. He writes from the heart and that is why his work is so touching and true.” Paul Mayhew-Archer (writer of the Vicar of Dibley)

How this will benefit the community
People with learning disabilities are one of the most disadvantaged group in the UK (Equality & Human Rights Commission). Only 7% of working-age adults are in some form of paid employment, and they die an average of 24 years earlier than the base population. There are very few “cultural leaders” within the learning disability community who are able to raise expectations and encourage others. Help Russell change perceptions about what people with learning disabilities can achieve.
