Russell Hghsmith, a 39-year-old learning-disabled playwright, recently held a read-through of his nearly finished play “Two Families and a Wedding” at Film Oxford, a local arts charity supporting him. The play, featuring eight characters, will have another read-through upon completion.
Driven by a passion for storytelling, Russell has successfully written and staged two previous plays for all audiences, particularly those with learning disabilities. Both had packed performances with many first-time theatregoers from the learning-disabled community.
His earlier works include “The Big Shock,” performed at The Cornerstone Theatre in Didcot with a young cast of drama students, and “Singles Night,” staged at the Old Fire Station theatre in Oxford with a professional cast that included two disabled actors.
Russell credits Film Oxford for his success, as the charity helped him secure funding and provided essential resources. The DYCP grant enabled Russell to collaborate with local writer Mark Ralph Bowman, who mentored him in refining the play.
Russell’s journey as a playwright has been transformative, aligning with his primary aim of enhancing his writing. If funding permits, he hopes to tour the finished play in small venues and continue to connect with audiences through his compelling storytelling.
As Russell nears completion of “Two Families and a Wedding,” he reflects on the grant’s crucial support, helping him evolve as an artist. His development promises to open doors to future opportunities, leading to more recognition, collaborations, and reaching wider audiences.
“My Arts Council grant gave me the time and space to focus on my writing. I am really excited by what I have created and can’t wait to see it on the stage.” Russell Highsmith
