Hidden Faces – video exhibition 10th – 17th November 2007

Dated: October 29, 2007

OFVM presents

Hidden Faces Exhibition 10th – 17th November OVADA

A journey of self-expression by people with learning difficulties

Opening event – meet the artists – 9th November 2007 6.30pm – 8.30pm

Hidden Faces is an innovative video art project produced by people with learning difficulties, which celebrates creativity and challenges preconceptions.

Come along to be amazed and entertained, to experience cutting-edge contemporary art, and to celebrate diversity in our community.

Hidden Faces is organized by OFVM Centre for Film & Digital Media and lead by internationally recognized video artist Chris Oakley and performance artist Danny Naspirpour, who has Down’s Syndrome and who recently performed work at The Tate Modern. During a series of three-day Hidden Faces workshops, 30 people with learning difficulties from around Oxfordshire took part in a journey of self-expression on the theme of identity. Their video art, together with supporting work, is a creative and highly original installation that portrays what it’s like for them living in Oxfordshire today.

“The aim of the Hidden Faces has been to allow participants to produce work exploring elements of their own identity and relationship to their immediate social contexts. Given a brief introduction to the methods used by contemporary artists in the exploration of self and artists’ use of the video medium, the workshops have provided the means for individuals to find their voices, and share these expressions of self with a broader public. The aim has been to allow those with learning disabilities to carry out their own exploration of themselves and the medium, making their own decisions with the workshop staff acting simply as facilitators.”

Chris Oakley, lead video artist

“Hidden Faces is a fantastic opportunity for people with learning disabilities to be creative and communicate ideas using digital media. People who often have difficulty communicating find digital video an accessible creative tool.”

Richard Duriez, OFVM
