The ‘Going Out Coming Out’ film trilogy documents the community heritage of three different groups in Oxford during the 60s, 70s & early 80s.



This project was co-led by Film Oxford a creative arts charity in partnership with ACKHI (African Caribbean Kultural Heritage Initiative), Oxford Pride, Oxford 50+ Network, the Museum of Oxford, and Oxfordshire History Centre. All three films were created by young people (16-25 not in full time education or employment) working alongside older participants 50+.
Project funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, supported by the Museum of Oxford (Oxford City Council), and the Oxfordshire History Centre (Oxfordshire County Council).
Spaces we made our own
In the 1960’s and 70’s the African Caribbean community in Oxford had no alternative but to create their own social spaces where they could cometogether and celebrate their music and culture.
Twist & Shout
Looks at the pub life, the music scene and the protesting of the ‘baby boomer’ generation in Oxford. Twisting and shouting their way through the 60s.
Going Out, Coming Out
Documents LGBTQ+ life in Oxford in the 70s & early 80s. Local Townies and students made new spaces to get together. But life and laws continue to change.
